Understanding how signatures evolve over a celebrity's career is critical to the authentication process. Full, legible signatures are common early in a career, but as demand grows, most celebrities develop a simplified version for speed, ease, and branding — often with guidance from their publicists. At a single event where a celebrity signs 500 items, signature #1 may look very different from signature #500, yet both are authentic.
Authentication at PCSA uses visual samples, styling cues, continuity of stroke, and signature versions, alongside other evidence: photos of the celebrity actually signing, celebrity location verification, and more.
Scientific methods are also employed to verify whether a signature is old enough to be authentic — ink type and ink-aging technologies provide additional physical evidence where applicable.
40 years ago, gaining comparative signature samples was difficult. Today the internet grants most authenticators access to the most voluminous database of signature images in history.
Unfortunately, that same access gives forgers the same advantage — which is exactly why PCSA insists on the gold standard: witnessing the signing in person.
If your item has been authenticated by PCSA, it will carry a Hologram decal containing a unique registration number corresponding to information in our verification database.
This ensures that through every resale and change of ownership, a collector can confirm the item was authenticated by PCSA — and that the registration number corresponds only to that particular item.
PCSA employs the latest technology and methods to process and verify a signature. Our proprietary scoring process requires a minimum score of 7 out of 10 before a signature can earn PCSA authentication.
Many other authenticators employ no scoring at all, or use a simple 50% threshold. As a result, signatures that fail our standard are sometimes "authenticated" by others — further polluting the market.
Each authentication is accompanied by a PCSA Certificate of Authenticity bearing the same hologram decal and registration number as the authenticated item. Owners should retain this certificate to accompany the item through all future transactions.
